Investing basics

Investing Basics Toolkit.

Before asking what to invest in, learn the language. Stocks, bonds, funds, ETFs, risk, fees, diversification, and time horizon. The vocabulary is the price of admission. Once you have it, the rest of the room sounds a lot less impressive.

Start with six questions

  • What is this money for?
  • When might I need it?
  • What do I already understand?
  • What do I not yet understand?
  • What fees or risks are involved?
  • Do I need professional advice on this one?
